His grandmother Valentina Rastvorova represented the Soviet Union in fencing, and won gold in team foil at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. She also won silver in individual foil at the 1960 Games, and silver in team foil at the 1964 Games in Tokyo. His grandfather Boris Grishin represented the Soviet Union in water polo, winning bronze at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo and silver at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. His mother Yelena Grishina represented the Soviet Union, the Unified Team and the Russian Federation in fencing. She won silver medals in team foil at the world championships in 1989 and 1990.
