In February 2022 he announced his retirement from competitive sport. "Ever since I was a kid, the Olympics have always been my dream, and that we have been able to go there four times together is something I am proud of and look back on with great satisfaction. The fact that I have put Dutch fencing on the map is a nice side effect. After every Olympics, I took a period of rest to think carefully about the future. And this time I came to the conclusion that it has actually been beautiful. I will now focus more on my family and my career."
