Sport Specific Information |
When and where did you begin this sport? |
He began fencing at age three at the Cercle Nevers Escrime club in France. |
Why this sport? |
His father was a fencing coach and would take Grumier along to training sessions. "I tried other sports but I never got as much pleasure as when I was fencing. Playing football requires going outside even when it rains, equestrian was out of the question because I am allergic to horses, and roller blading just wasn't serious enough. As for taking up epee, it was by pure chance. Nevers, the club I belonged to, specialised in it so I focused on it by accident." |

Other information |
RETIREMENT He announced his retirement after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and since then has worked as a sports teacher at the National Institute for Sport, Expertise and Performance [INSEP] as well as a fencing coach. "I stopped competing because I was tired of going away on camps and competitions, and also because after my ankle operation in 2013 I had recurring pain every year. When I see my friends training now, I realise it's not for me anymore, I wouldn't enjoy it. I am staying involved on the circuit in other ways, which explains why I don't miss it too much. Besides, it's my choice, it's what I wanted. I wasn't pushed out, and that is important." (sport24.lefigaro.fr, 28 Dec 2016; sport.francetvinfo.fr, 11 May 2017)
OTHER ACTIVITIES He holds the national Maitre d'Armes [Master of Arms] degree for instructing fencing. (Sportmag, 01 Dec 2010) |
