Sporting philosophy / motto |
"What we do from a sporting point of view, if we are only limited to the sporting event, wouldn't be that useful. I think that what sport has to teach, the message it has to convey, is the opportunity to come together socially and share positive values." (eurosport.com, 09 Sep 2020) |

ACADEMIC AMBITION In March 2022 he graduated with a degree in medicine. "It took me quite some time, 10 years and five months exactly, but not a single minute was wasted. It was a long road combining fencing and medicine, because the discipline needed for both of them is the same. Do not believe that sports and studies cannot get along. It's a lie." (fanpage.it, 03 Aug 2022; morningfuture.com, 13 May 2022; sportface.it, 22 Mar 2022; Instagram profile, 24 Feb 2022)
STOLEN MEDAL In October 2016, after falling asleep on a train to Turin, his Olympic gold medal was stolen from his backpack. It was later found in a pile of rubbish outside a train station by a local woman who connected with him via social media. "I'm really happy. Even though I'd come to terms with losing the medal, it was like a part of me had been taken away. I asked her to kindly send a photo of it first. Not that I didn't trust her, but I really didn't want to be let down." (straitstimes.com, 13 Nov 2016)
OTHER ACTIVITIES In 2018 he founded an international fencing camp in Italy called Future Champions Camp along with his father Salvo and his brother Enrico. (lasicilia.it, 29 Dec 2022) |
