Other information TRAINING IN ITALY
He splits his time between Curitiba, Brazil, and Rome, Italy, where he trains with coach Filippo Lombardo. He started going to Italy in 2007 after he noticed an improvement in the performances of fellow Brazilian fencer Renzo Agresta, who had also spent time in Europe. "After the first training sessions I saw a change. I went back twice in 2008 and again in 2009. By 2010 I decided to rent an apartment and stay there. Renzo was my reference. We are about the same age, and I realised he improved after going to Italy. I am not ashamed to copy whatever someone else is doing, as long as it is also good for me." NAME
He was named after one of the swordsman in Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel 'The Three Musketeers'. His father chose the name, and presented Schwantes with the book when he was a young boy. "I like it a lot. When I was a child I had problems because it was different, but then I realised it is very cool. However, I do not plan to name my children after the Musketeers." TRAINING MISHAP
In July 2007 his sword broke while he was training with his brother and teammate Ivan. The weapon punctured Ivan's lung and he was forced to undergo surgery, missing the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil. (globoesporte.globo.com, 29 Apr 2016)
